The Red Bull Soapbox Race is coming back to Des Moines.

After drawing more than 25,000 spectators to the Iowa State Capitol Complex in 2022, the amateur race competition in which teams create homemade carts -- or "soapboxes" -- and race them through a downhill course is returning this spring.

The energy drink company began hosting soapbox races in 2020. The June 2022 race is the only one to be held in Des Moines.

Here's what to know about this year's Red Bull Soapbox Race in Des Moines and how you can get involved.

What is the Red Bull Soapbox Derby?

A soapbox, also called a gravity racer, is a homemade motorless vehicle propelled by gravity designed to race downhill.

Since 2000, more than 100 Red Bull Soapbox Races have been held in countries on every continent except Antarctica. Of those, 18 have been held in U.S. cities, with Des Moines being the last U.S. city to host one in 2022.

What are teams competing for in the Red Bull Soapbox Races?

Participating soapbox teams will be judged on criteria consisting "of one-third speed, one-third creativity and one-third showmanship," according to a news release. All vehicles must have fully functioning brakes and steering.

The top three teams will receive trophies and prizes. Special awards will also be given, including a people's choice category, the fastest speed and the Casey's Hometown Hero award.

How do I enter the 2025 Red Bull Soapbox Race in Des Moines?

Red Bull is accepting team applications until March 31. Afterward, up to 50 teams will be selected to participate. Applications for teams of five are free, but each applicant must be 18 years or older to enter.

"Past applicants have found inspiration for their car designs in everything from local cultural icons to favorite foods to their field of study in school," according to the news release.

To enter, submit a sketch of your vehicle at redbull.com/soapboxraceiowa. If selected, Red Bull will send you an exclusive Soapbox Race driver's license and a participation kit to begin building your vehicle.

When is the 2025 Red Bull Soapbox Race in Des Moines?

The 2025 Red Bull Soapbox Race will be held on May 31 at the Iowa Capitol Grounds on East Walnut Street, and it is free to the public.
