BENTON, La. -- Areas of Bossier Parish continue to grow and Bossier Parish police jurors want to get a handle on any challenges that come with that growth.
During Wednesday's monthly meeting, police jurors voted to schedule public hearings to consider several proposed developments.
They listened to several developers who are requesting zoning changes for nearly 400 acres of land in the parish, from agricultural properties to residential and business districts. If approved, one development will divide more than 125 acres of land into more than 400 lots for new homes in north Bossier.
Another is seeking to build a proposed automobile and truck travel center and future commercial development in the Haughton area.
Police Jury President Glenn Benton said he is excited about the possibility of new homes and businesses coming to the parish.
"This is outstanding, and this is a great problem to solve," Benton said.
He believes the growth the parish is experiencing is because of the schools, churches and a community that wants to grow.
"I know the biggest issue we are facing at present is traffic, but we are working toward solutions that will solve today's traffic woes and the future growth that is coming to Bossier Parish," Benton said.
In other matters, District 12 Police Juror Keith Sutton was appointed to the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission Advisory Board. he will fill the unexpired term of Bob Brotherton, who died last month. The term expires Dec. 31, 2028.
"I have some big shoes to fill, and I am honored to be selected to serve on the advisory board," said Sutton. "I have a love for sports and a love for quality sports in northwest Louisiana, and I hope we can build on the legacy of Coach Brotherton and bring more sporting events to the area."
