Selena Gomez Says 'Some of the Magic Has Disappeared' amid 'Emilia Pérez' Controversy

While attending the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, Feb. 9, Gomez, 32, said she feels the "magic has disappeared" with the film following the controversy over her costar Karla Sofía Gascón's offensive comments in resurfaced X posts.

When asked during a panel how she is doing, Gomez replied, "I'm good. I'm really good. Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I've done, and I'm just grateful."

"I live with no regrets and I would do this movie over and over again if I could," she added.

Gomez's latest comments about the film's controversies come after Gascón, 52, made a tearful appearance on CNN en Español as she addressed the allegations of racism and Islamophobia in her old tweets on Feb 2.

Among the resurfaced tweets was a supposed tweet from Gascón aimed at her costar Gomez in which she reportedly called her a "rich rat" amid her rumored feud with Hailey Bieber, which the Spanish actress denied posting.

"It's not mine, of course," Gascón claimed, per CNN. "I have never said anything about my colleague I would never refer to her that way."

The alleged since-deleted tweet against Gomez was shared in 2022 alongside a photo of Gomez and Bieber, 28, reuniting in a photo together at the Annual Academy Museum Gala that year, The Latin Times initially reported.

Gascón claimed in her interview with CNN that the social media post was fake and created in an attempt to damage her Oscar campaign following her nomination as the first openly transgender actress for best actress.

"[People] have dedicated themselves to searching, to put together all the things that I had said at a time that I had written -- most of which are false ... most of them I don't even recognize that I wrote them," she said. "And they put them all together and so it seems that she is a very bad person and we remove her just when we can do the most damage, right in the voting period."

On Feb. 5, Zoe Saldaña also spoke out for the second time over her Emilia Pérez costar Gascón's past offensive comments, saying that she is "sad" and "disappointed."

She said on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, "I'm sad ... that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened. I'm also disappointed. I can't speak for other people's actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here."
