Walmart to open fast food restaurants in stores as retailer mimics Costco

WALMART has teamed up with a fast-food giant and will open new restaurants in six stores that are coming later this year.

The supermarket's move has been interpreted as a play to take on popular wholesalers such as Costco.

Walmart shoppers will soon be able to get their hands on Wienerschnitzel hot dogs.

The chain has been part of the fast-food landscape for more than 60 years and has a presence in 13 states.

Diners will be able to get their hands on popular snacks such as a chili-cheese flavored hot dog, jalapeno poppers, and chilli cheese fries.

Restaurant bosses are thrilled by the partnership.

"Wienerschnitzel has spent decades building a strong reputation, especially on the West Coast, and this expansion into Walmart stores signifies a new era of growth for the brand," Shak Turner, the brand's Director of Franchise, said.

"It's clear Wienerschnitzel's unique concept fills a specific void for multi-brand franchisees looking to grow their portfolios, which is one of the elements that attracted me to the brand initially.

"I'm thrilled to join this amazing team and play a part in spearheading initiatives and new partnerships, which will no doubt catapult the brand to new markets."

When the restaurants open, Walmart shoppers will be able to grab a hot dog - just like shoppers in Costco.

Costco shoppers can get a hot dog for $1.50 at the wholesaler's food courts.

Walmart also has a partnership with the Italian chain Mr Gatti's Pizza.

A dozen Mr Gatti's Pizza establishments opened their doors in November 2024.

There are plans to open Mr Gatti's restaurants inside 92 Walmart stores over the next year.

"By bringing our restaurants into Walmart, we're making it easier for families to enjoy our pizza -- whether they're shopping, picking it up to-go, or having it delivered," Jim Phillips, the CEO of Mr. Gatti's said.

The partnership between the supermarket and restaurant chain was announced in July last year.

Walmart has also teamed up with the restaurant chain Crave Hot Dogs & Barbecue.

In January last year, restaurant bosses revealed plans to expand into 100 supermarkets.

"This new venture allows us to offer quick and delicious dining, and we're excited to see the positive impact it will have on the community," Samantha Rincione, the CEO of Crave, said.

Some Walmart stores have facilities where shoppers can grab poke bowls and pretzels.

Meanwhile, The U.S. Sun has reported how a popular chicken chain, dubbed better than Popeye's, is to open a slew of new restaurants.

Ten El Pollo Loco restaurants will be open for business at the end of the year.

Costco chiefs have announced they are in the process of opening 27 new warehouses.
