Josh Dobbs highlights balance of competition and camaraderie in Patriots QB room

FOXBOROUGH -- The hierarchy in the New England Patriots quarterback room is no secret. Drake Maye is the starter, while the team brought in Joshua Dobbs this offseason to serve as the backup quarterback, which also provides a veteran presence in the room.

On Tuesday, Dobbs spoke with reporters and gave some insight into the Patriots' quarterback room, detailing Maye's impact along with UDFA Ben Wooldridge.

"Each room has its own dynamic," Dobbs said. "Drake's played a lot of football. He's learned from his dad, who's really good at football as well. Ben's a very smart kid. He's played a lot of football in college before he's gotten here, so we have a lot of experience. But at the end of the day, it's all just about guys coming together."

However, while Dobbs' role in New England might seem clear, he doesn't see himself as only the backup quarterback.

"I would say any quarterback in this league doesn't view themselves as a backup," Dobbs explained. "They view themselves as a person that can step in there, execute the offense, and be one of 32 on any given Sunday."

"Our roles and the depth chart -- that's obviously decided," he added. "We're not numb to that. But the way you approach every single day -- being prepared, ready to execute, always knowing your stuff, being a professional, and also knowing that when you go out there, you can be the top quarterback in the league and dice up the defense, no matter where you're starting on the depth chart."

And with that, all three quarterbacks have embraced both the competition that comes with training camp, along with the closeness they have formed by spending hours and hours of every single day together.

"Obviously, we're all competing every day," Dobbs said. "We all want to have that perfect practice -- step on the field, move the offense, execute cleanly. But it's also great to come back into the room and bounce ideas off each other."
