Barstool Sports reviewed more than just pizza during Delaware visit: Charcoal Pit, too

Sure, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy reviewed a trio of Delaware pizza places last week for the first time, making headlines and giving First State fans what they've wanted for years.

But lost in the shuffle of Portnoy's reviews of Milltown's Argilla Brewing Co. @ Pietro's Pizza, Delaware's largest home-based chain Grotto Pizza and Brandywine Hundred's Café Sitaly was a review of one of the state's most iconic eateries: the Charcoal Pit in Milltown.

While the Charcoal Pit review video was recorded around the time of Portnoy's visit a month ago, this one was by Barstool Spots finance blogger Michael 'Large' McCarthy, who was in town as part of the production for the ill-fated Gillie & Wallo boxing event at the Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington.

In a Wednesday, Jan. 15 Barstool Sports post entitled "YOU GOTTA TRY THIS - Joe Biden's Favorite Burger," McCarthy wrote about his visit to the venerated greasy spoon, first opened in 1956 by four brothers (Lou, Sam, Marty and Aaron Sloan) and now owned by Louis Capano Jr. and Louis Capano III.

"It's the type of establishment you hope never fully goes away or gets bought up by a huge private equity shop that will inevitably kill its vibe," McCarthy wrote in his glowing review.

"Seeing the checkered floors, mini jukeboxes at every table and Formica countertops gave you the sense that the Charcoal Pit has been around for quite some time, but it is those pebbled red-plastic cups that really brought me back to the diners and luncheonettes of my youth," he continued.

While bellied up in one of the Pit's famous booths, which have hosted generations of Delawareans, along with both President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama through the years, McCarthy sampled plenty on the menu.

Fried Pickle hamburger: The burger, topped with fried pickles, cheddar cheese, "Thousand Island sauce," lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun, got a big thumbs up.

"I went there just looking to get a good burger and that's exactly what I got," McCarthy said in his review video. "Because I'm kind of sick of the smash burger culture that we've been pushing lately, it was nice to cut into a burger and see an actual inside instead of just two charred outer layers."

New England Clam Chowder: The Charcoal Pit offers homemade chowders two days a week: Wednesdays are for Maryland crab and Fridays are New England clam. With McCarthy landing in his booth on a Friday, he went with a cup of the clam.

"They make their own chowder, so you know I had to get one," he said, narrating over footage of himself slurping a spoonful.

Jumbo fried shrimp: The restaurant offers eight fried shrimp as an appetizer and McCarthy scarfed all of them down. And when we say all of them, we mean all of them.

"I eat every tail off every fried shrimp that I've ever had in my life," he said in a bit of a strange flex.

He also positive things to say about the cup of coleslaw that came with the shrimp, saying the cabbage was finely shredded: "It makes a difference."

Strawberry milkshake: McCarthy showed his shake in its frosty stainless steel malt cup with a spoon sticking straight up out of the ice cream.

"It passed the spoon test," he said. "And trying to get it through the straw was the only struggle I had during that dinner."

In wrapping up his review, he took a shot at Biden on his way out: "This is Wilmington, Delaware. This is the Charcoal Pit. Joe Biden may forget the last time he was here, but I don't think I'll forget my meal ... You gotta try it." (Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were handed Charcoal Pit milkshakes at the Democratic National Convention.)

Charcoal Pit chef Lupé Avilez said having Barstool Sports at the restaurant was "very exciting -- especially for our younger staff who are big time Barstool fans."

He added, "The buzz we've been getting lately has been incredible and we love sharing what makes Charcoal Pit special with our new visitors from all around the country."
