A brush fire that erupted Friday on a boulder-laden hillside near Lake Mathews scorched roughly two acres before Cal Fire aircraft stopped it.
The non-injury "Rocky Fire" was reported at 3:08 p.m. in the area of Rocky Glen Road and Rolling Meadows Drive in Gavilan Hills, an unincorporated community west of Perris and south of the lake, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location, but due to the challenging terrain, they were unable to hike to the spot for a half-hour.
Two Cal Fire air tankers arrived overhead within minutes and initiated runs on the brusher, which was moving at a moderate rate to the east, according to reports from the scene. No homes or other structures were threatened.
The brusher's forward rate of spread was halted by 4 p.m., and the tankers departed the area.
A Cal Fire water-dropping helicopter remained at the location, making targeted drops at the direction of ground crews, who largely contained the blaze by 4:30 p.m.
