A popular sugar product sold in Ireland has been recalled after it emerged a specific batch included an undeclared ingredient that poses a potential health risk to some people.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced on Friday that a batch of Royal Orient Palm Sugar has been recalled as it contains sulphites which is not mentioned on the label.

The food safety watchdog said this may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sulphites and therefore.

These consumers have been warned that they "should not eat" the implicated batch.

The batches being recalled are the Royal Orient Palm Sugar pack sizes 500g and 454g with a best before date of March 21, 2027.

Palm sugar is a sweetener made from the nectar of the coconut or toddy palm flowers. It's an integral ingredient in Thai and Southeast Asian cooking.

This latest recall comes after more fresh salad leaves were pulled from shelves by the food safety watchdog after listeria was detected.

The latest recall affects Garden of Eden Baby Spinach, in pack sizes 100g, 200g and 500g with batch codes F2776 and F2786; as well as Garden of Eden Mixed Baby Leaf, in pack sizes 100g and 500g with batch codes 0805B, 0805P, 0805R and 0805Y.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, it can lead to more severe symptoms, particularly for pregnant women, babies, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems. The time between exposure and the onset of symptoms averages around three weeks but can range from three to 70 days.
