While it is not unusual for licensed movies to often hit #1 on Netflix's Top 10 list, this is a particularly weird case in terms of what's made it to the top at present.
Netflix original Kinda Pregnant has now moved down the list to #2 behind a movie called Aftermath. I'd never heard of it, but doing a bit of research, I have no real idea what the deal is with this movie and how it ended up apparently being the most-watched movie in the country right now, given Netflix's reach.
The film stars Dylan Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), Mason Gooding (Scream VI) and Dichen Lachman (Severance), and is described as follows:
"Trapped on Boston's Tobin Bridge after a bomb explodes, a former Army Ranger must use his elite training to save his sister and fellow hostages from a group of vengeful ex-military contractors led by an unhinged war criminal."
What's weird about this movie and its new popularity on Netflix? A few things:
I'm just confused about how a totally unknown movie like this, starring no one even close to the A-list (though I do love you, Dichen Lachman), is suddenly the #1 movie on Netflix, beating out high profile Netflix originals like Back in Action and Kinda Pregnant, or actually good licensed films like The Menu and Miss Congeniality, also on the list right now.
I've been trying to find out more here, but there are no indications on how this got pushed to the top other than, I don't know, perhaps a front page feature and people thought the trailer and/or thumbnail looked cool? It's not what I'm seeing when logging in, despite action movies being my thing. Rather I'm getting a preview of Rogue Agent, a 2022 spy film starring Gemma Arterton. That actually does have decent reviews, different than whatever exactly is going on with Aftermath here.
