For when you want another reason to cling to your Valentine's Day date.
Valentine's Day is super romantic and loving and full of cute gestures and flowers and all the love you could imagine... which is why it's perfect to spend the day watching horror movies!
Typically, the holiday isn't synonymous with horror but there are so many amazing horror movies that are perfect for the occasion. After all, love makes people do crazy things, like go on a slashing spree or cast spells of love. So, if you're looking for something different than a standard rom-com to watch on February 14th, keep on reading!
Heart Eyes is the newest installment on this list, with a release date of February 7th, 2025. Heart Eyes is your traditional slasher, hunting down and killing people while wearing a mask. What makes Heart Eyes slightly different is that he (or she) only hunts couples on Valentine's Day that are celebrating and the masked slasher has glowing red, heart-shaped eyes. I have a soft spot for meta-slasher movies, so if you do too, Heart Eyes is perfect for the holiday.
This one is obvious, but it isn't Valentine's Day for a horror fan without watching My Bloody Valentine. There are two, one from 1981 and the other from 2009. The story is the same across both, however. In a mining town, there was an accident that killed five men and put a sixth man in a coma. After waking up from his coma, that man went on to kill 22 people with a pick-axe on Valentine's Day. Fast forward again, and the pick-axe killer is back terrorizing the town on Valentine's Day again.
The Love Witch is a classic in my opinion. The movie is so ethereal and dream-like, with an almost whimsical feel while you watch it. However, it is about a young witch who is determined to make a man love her. She brews up spells and potions in a Victorian-style apartment, but she's almost too good of a witch, and all her victims end up loving her too much. Naturally, she doesn't want them when they want her, so first comes love, then comes murder.
Lisa Frankenstein is another newer movie from this list, releasing in 2024 and I loved it! It's the story of a misunderstood teenager who brings a Victorian-era man back to life so she can feel the love she feels she deserves. After bringing him back to life, the two go on a killing spree in the name of love and to find body parts. Nothing says true love like mass murder and rotting limbs.
Valentine is another story of a masked maniac stalking and killing women in the days leading up to Valentine's Day. However, the victims in this movie are not absolved of all sins because the killer is only seeking revenge. In high school, the victims wrongfully accused the school nerd of unwanted sexual advances, so one of the popular guys beats him bloody. As years pass and anger festers, the nerd decides it's time to take his power back and hunt his bullies down.
