7 'Nightmare on Elm Street' (2010) June 1st Nightmare On Elm Street R Mystery Horror Thriller Runtime 1h 31m Director Samuel Bayer Writers Wesley Strick, Eric Heisserer Sequel(s) Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy Franchise(s) A Nightmare on Elm Street Cast Thomas Dekker Clancy Brown Katie Cassidy Jackie Earle Haley

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most iconic and beloved horror movies of all time. It provided an early platform for Johnny Depp and created a horror icon out of Robert Englund. Essential in laying the groundwork for the slasher genre, it proved that horror can be both brutal and nasty, yet also fun and a little silly -- paving the way for countless films with a similar tone, including Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Remake Fails to Recapture the Gruesome Magic of the Original

Following a string of sequels -- released to varying degrees of success -- a remake was made in 2010, which was generally met with unfavorable reviews. Lacking Robert Englund's charisma and the dreamlike creativity of the original, it often feels like a soulless rehash, relying too heavily on jump scares instead of the sustained tension and psychological dread that made the original so memorable.

That said, for diehard fans of the series and franchise completionists who may have missed it, it might be worth a watch (if only to tick it off the list). Otherwise, we recommend revisiting the original instead.

Starring Adrien Brody as a troubled psychologist plagued by the death of his daughter and riddled with guilt, Backtrack is a slow-burning supernatural mystery that sees the doctor haunted by ghostly apparitions and nightmarish visions. As he delves deeper into these encounters, he unravels a mystery linking back to a traumatic event in his childhood.

'Backtrack' Is Anchored by Brody's Compelling Performance

As expected, Brody delivers a solid performance as the grief-stricken psychologist. Elsewhere, though, not everything is quite as compelling. The plot is somewhat muddled, and it never really feels thrilling enough to be a thriller nor scary enough to be a horror. Fortunately, its dark, haunting atmosphere and powerful lead performance are enough to keep it from being a complete wash.

With a talented cast including Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy, Invasion of the Body Snatchers presents a chilling narrative in which a small town is overtaken by alien pods that replace humans with emotionless duplicates. As the townsfolk realize the horrifying truth, they must fight to avoid becoming soulless copies themselves.

One of the Greatest Remakes of All Time

This remake of the 1956 classic wastes no time immersing viewers in a suspenseful, paranoia-fueled allegorical narrative. Considered one of the all-time greatest remakes, its theme of the loss of individuality and identity to conformity -- along with the eerie transformation of familiar faces into emotionless imposters -- is an utterly terrifying prospect that has haunted generations since its release.

Director M. Night Shyamalan is one of the most divisive filmmakers in recent history -- responsible for some certified classics (The Sixth Sense, Signs), some absolute stinkers (The Last Airbender, After Earth), and others that split opinion right down the middle (Trap, Old).

It's safe to say that his unconventional superhero hit Unbreakable comfortably sits near the top of his filmography. Split serves as a spin-off sequel of sorts to Unbreakable -- although this connection was kept tightly under wraps prior to its release. Despite some glaring plot holes, the movie generally received positive reviews and is seen as a worthy addition to the Unbreakable universe.

James McAvoy Delivers a Tour-de-Force Performance

Split follows the terrifying ordeal of three kidnapped girls held captive by a man with dissociative identity disorder. James McAvoy wowed critics and audiences alike as the captor, seamlessly shifting between vastly different personalities -- ranging from a stern matriarch to a frightened child -- with a monstrous 24th identity, "The Beast," slowly emerging. Bringing chilling realism and intensity to the role, McAvoy's performance elevates the film from a standard thriller into a deeply unsettling character study.

This horror-comedy sees bandleader Kay Kyser and his orchestra arrive at a spooky mansion to perform at a wealthy heiress's birthday party, only to get caught up in a web of phony séances, hidden passages, and a sinister plot conjured by a group of scheming reprobates.

'Scary Movie' Before 'Scary Movie'

You'll Find Out is a gleefully silly movie that playfully poked fun at horror tropes and conventions long before the Wayans family ever joked about jump scares and laughed at horror logic. If you like your horror light-hearted and easy to watch, you may find fun in this classic flick, which was a commercial hit at the time of its release back in 1940.

Taking inspiration from Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Invitation is a creepy gothic thriller that follows a woman who, after her mother's death, meets long-lost family members and discovers she is part of the British aristocracy. Initially welcomed by her new family, she eventually uncovers a sinister plot involving deadly vampiric rituals.

'The Invitation' Was a Critical and Commercial Flop, But Found a New Lease on Life on Netflix

Plagued by negative reviews, the movie underperformed at the box office. However, when it hit Netflix a few years later, it gained newfound popularity among horror enthusiasts who appreciated its dark, atmospheric tone and homage to classic gothic horror -- a feat it could be set to repeat when it arrives on Max on June 24.
