A memorial was unveiled on Thursday at the old Crownsville State Hospital to honor people who were buried in unmarked graves on the property.
At the top of a hill on the back of the property sit more than 1,700 unmarked graves of patients who died at the hospital.
Now, a marker sits at the bottom of the hill to honor them.
"Unspeakable injustices were carried out here, and together we say in one voice what happened in Crownsville can never happen again," said Maryland first lady Dawn Moore.
The "Say My Name" memorial is inscribed with those previously nameless patients who died horrible deaths at the hands of those who worked at the hospital from 1912 to 1965.
"It helps us to remember those who may have died silently. It's heartbreaking to know and even as a patient here, I never knew the history until I read the book 'Madness.' So, all that stuff was shocking to me. I had no idea," said Sonia King, a former patient at the hospital.
Friends of Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery spent more than 20 years meticulously researching names and shedding light on a previously unknown history.
"This is the day to honor these souls that never went home," said Janice Hayes-Williams, founder of the Friends of Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery.
"A place for healing for the county," said Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. "A place for healing for our people. A place for healing for this whole country."
